Profile:

Trained as an aerospace engineer, Ilan has forged an exceptional career marked by a profound passion for space exploration and education. As a research associate at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), she worked on India’s inaugural human space flight project, Mission Gaganyaan, posted at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine within the Indian Air Force in Bengaluru.

Motivated by a commitment to ignite the curiosity of the next generation in space science, Ilan served as the Chief Training Officer (CTO) at Space Development Nexus in India. In this role, she oversaw the training of students in various aspects of space science, specializing in teaching astronomy and astrobiology to K-12 grades.

Research:

Beyond her national contributions, Ilan is a certified analog astronaut actively engaged in global analog astronautics research. Her substantial involvement extends to the Habitat Marte Space Analog Station in Brazil, where she engages in research within simulated extraterrestrial environments. Demonstrating a profound interest in analog astronautics, she aspires to significantly contribute to India’s analog field research. Her expertise is underscored by completing planetary field training at Ladakh, a high-altitude Mars analog in India, further solidifying her position as a key figure in this specialized domain.
A seasoned speaker, Ilan has presented novel ideas in planetary and space sciences and co-convened sessions at prestigious international conferences, including the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) and the Astrobiology Science Conference (AbSciCon).

After completing the Young Scientist Program in 2021, Ilan continued in her current role as a visiting scholar at the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science where she actively contributes to astrobiology projects and science communication.

Besides being a researcher, she is a dedicated member and volunteer of various international forums. Her contributions to white papers and her role as an invited speaker at international platforms highlight her commitment to advancing discussions on space science. Drawing from a wealth of experiences in astrobiology and space science, Ilan propels advancements in shaping the future of planetary science and space exploration. Her academic journey spans collaborations across non-profits, government, industry, and entrepreneurial ventures, enriching the dynamic landscape of space science.

As a part of the Mangalyatra – Crew 292, she will extend her expertise as a ground control member in the remote mission support team.
