The Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) is India's first full-scale crewed Mars analog mission. Located in the Tso Kar Valley in Ladakh at an elevation of 4,530 metres (14,500 ft), the station sits in one of the most Mars-like environments on Earth — a high-altitude cold desert characterised by thin air, freezing temperatures, low atmospheric pressure, intense UV radiation, and saline permafrost.
The facility was built by Bengaluru-based space technology firm Protoplanet and inaugurated by ISRO Chairman Dr V. Narayanan on 31 July 2025. It is operated in collaboration with ISRO's Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC), with scientific contributions from IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIST, and RGCB Trivandrum.
Mars Society Australia — a chapter of the Mars Society — is a senior partner in the project, providing advisory expertise and contributing crew members to missions. MSA directors Dr Jonathan Clarke and Dr Annalea Beattie participated as team members during the inaugural August 2025 mission. Dr Siddharth Pandey, MSA director and founder of Protoplanet, leads the initiative on the ground.
The Mars Society has joined HOPE as a global partner, offering both expertise and financial support, and will be directly involved in future crew selection — drawing on decades of experience from the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah and the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS) in northern Canada.
The Habitat
Two interconnected dome-shaped modules named after Mars' moons — designed to simulate life on an extraterrestrial surface.

Research & Objectives
HOPE tests how humans handle the physical and mental challenges of long-duration space missions — from crew health to habitat operations.
Human Performance
Studying genomic, proteomic, and metabolic responses through blood, urine, and stool samples. Evaluating mood, sleep quality, cognitive performance, and team dynamics under isolation and confinement. Practising astronaut-like daily routines, exercise regimes, and structured communication with Mission Control.
Technology & Operations
Testing life support systems, habitat technology, and extravehicular activity (EVA) protocols. Validating health monitoring systems and planetary surface operation procedures. Conducting microbial analysis, epigenetic studies, and in-situ resource utilisation (ISRU) research. Supporting India's Gaganyaan programme, planned space station by 2035, and crewed lunar landing by 2040.
Inaugural Crew
Two analog astronauts spent 10 days in strict isolation inside the HOPE habitat, conducting experiments in psychology, physiology, and planetary science.
Rahul Mogalapalli
PhD candidate in aerospace engineering at Purdue University. Responsible for running experiments on psychology, physiology, and epigenetic studies during the mission.
Yaman Akot
Planetary scientist and University of Aberdeen graduate. Responsible for psychology and physiology experiments as well as EVA operations on the Ladakh terrain.
Dr Siddharth Pandey
Founded Protoplanet and designed the HOPE facility. MSA Director with over a decade of experience leading analog and field studies across India, Australia, and extreme environments worldwide.
Dr Jonathan Clarke
Senior Mars Society Australia member and geologist with extensive analog mission experience. Participated as a team member during the inaugural August 2025 HOPE mission.
Dr Annalea Beattie
Mars Society Australia director with expertise in art-science collaboration in extreme environments. Contributed as a team member during the first HOPE mission in Ladakh.

LHAM — Ladakh Human Analog Mission
ISRO's Human Space Flight Centre launched the first Ladakh Human Analog Mission (LHAM) in Leh — a month-long mission in partnership with AAKA Space Studio, University of Ladakh, and IIT Bombay. India's first analog space mission of any kind.

HOPE Inaugurated
ISRO Chairman Dr V. Narayanan formally inaugurated the HOPE station in Tso Kar Valley on 31 July. The Mars Society announced its partnership, with MSA as a contributing chapter.
First Crewed Mission (10 Days)
